‘Be Kind to Our Team’ campaign launched at Reuse and Recycling Centres
LondonEnergy, the company responsible for running seven Reuse and Recycling Centres across North London, has launched a campaign to encourage users of the sites to ‘Be Kind to Our Team’ and remind them that any form of abuse will not be tolerated.
The campaign, which will be promoted via social media and new onsite signage, follows an increase in cases of employee abuse, some of which have needed to be reported to the police.
Commenting on the launch LondonEnergy’s Waste Operations Manager, Katie Blowes, said: “Whilst the vast majority of residents using our sites are friendly and considerate, we are unfortunately seeing an increase in abusive behaviour towards our people which in some cases has become violent.
The LondonEnergy team are enthusiastic and keen to help people manage their waste as quickly and sustainably as possible. We hope that the ‘Be Kind to Our Team’ campaign will serve as polite reminder that no one should come to work facing the prospect of being abused and that we can eliminate this behaviour across our sites.”
Sadly, reports of both aggressive and unfriendly behaviour from members of the public towards LondonEnergy employees have increased, with incidents occurring almost daily across their network of reuse and recycling centres.
According to the Environmental Services Association (ESA), its members experienced over 1800 incidents of violence and aggression in the 2021-22 period, with most cases involving verbal abuse at reuse and recycling centres. These figures represent only a portion of the issue, as not all ESA members reported their data, local authority data was not included, and many incidents went unreported.
LondonEnergy operates Reuse and Recycling Centres across Barnet, Camden, Enfield, Hackney, Haringey, Islington, and Waltham Forest. This include the capital’s newest reuse and recycling centre at LondonEnergy’s Edmonton EcoPark. The new site accepts over 150 different types of waste including large and small electrical appliances, garden waste and a number of hard to recycle materials like carpets, polystyrene and vapes.
